The creation of the EEC (European Economic Community) has made it necessary to establish common standards named "European Norms" (EN), therefore standardizing the common language across Europe. Since 1988 a new series of 'mandatory' European standards (EN) has been created, to replace national standards, such as BS, DIN, SS and NF, throughout 18 countries of Western Europe.
The European (EN) standards include of specifications for delivery conditions, properties, quality, dimensions and definitions of all products, raw materials and processes of the iron and steel industry. Among others, Euronorm standards cover a large variety of structural and constructional steels, from hot and cold rolled steels, plates, sheets and strips, heat treatable steels, castings, stainless and heat resisting steels, electrical steels etc.
For more information on the EN designation system see Introduction to the Euronorm Standard Designation System.
The table below provides a part of the most important Euronorm standards for structural and constructional steels.
For further examples of Structural and Constructional Steel Standards see Euronorm Structural and Constructional Steels: Part Two.
