Italian (UNI) Standards for Steel Materials

In 1993, the Italian National Standards Institute (UNI) adopted the new International Classification for Standards (ICS) drawn up by ISO (International Organization for Standardization). In Italy UNI standards are produced by the Ente Nazionale Italiano di Unificazione. The prefix is UNI, which is followed by a four-digit product form code, and alphanumeric alloy identification similar to the DIN abbreviation system.

Metals standards are industry wide agreements as to how metals are defined. In this definition there may be information about the chemical composition, process of manufacture, heat treatment and many other pieces of hidden knowledge. The standard usually attempts to codify all of the various attributes into a simple to read letter/number designation. The ultimate utility of these standards is communication. Engineers, machinists, purchasing agents, and suppliers can all speak the same language of steel, aluminum, and copper and be assured of a consistent product.

A designation is the specific identification of each grade, type, or class of steel by a number, letter, symbol, name, or suitable combination. Unique to a particular steel grade, type and class are terms used to classify steel products. Within the steel industry, they have very specific uses: grade is used to denote chemical composition; type is used to indicate deoxidation practice; and class is used to describe some other attribute, such as strength level or surface smoothness.

Since 1988 a new series of 'mandatory' European standards (EN = Europaischen Normen) has been created, to replace national standards, such as BS, DIN, SS and NF, throughout 18 countries of Western Europe.

EN is a part of the 'Single Market' legislation, designed to give equal opportunities for firms to compete throughout Europe, by harmonising the technical requirements between countries. The national standards bodies, of which BSI is one, are required to officially withdraw their national standards, when an EN is created with the same scope of application.

Many Italian UNI Standards, as well as some other European and International Standards have been adopted as Italian UNI EN and consequently replaced old and existing UNI material designations.
