PROPRIETARY VP100 Heat Treatments
- Annealing: If necessary, the proper procedure is to heat slowly and evenly to temperatures between 650 and 700°C, at a maximum rate of 100°C/h, keeping 1 hour for every 25 mm of the largest section of the piece. Slowly cool in an oven (30°C/h) to 600°C; then cool in calm air.
Stress Relief: After machining with large material removal, stress relief is recommended, heating the molds slowly and evenly (max. 100°C/h) up to about 500°C; do not exceed this temperature, due to the risk of reduced hardness. Keep 0.5 hour at temperature for every 25 mm of the largest section in the piece; regardless of the section, the time must not be less than 2 hours. After relief, cool in calm air.
Quenching: The basic procedure includes austenitization between 840 and 860°C. Cooling should be done in calm air, forced convection, or oil suitable for quenching.
Tempering: When tempered, tools should be tempered immediately, as soon as they reach 60°C. A temper is sufficient for an effective heat treatment. After soaking, the pieces should slowly cool down to room temperature. The tempering temperature must be chosen according to the desired hardness. The time of each tempering must be at least 2 hours.
Nitriding: Can be applied when higher surface hardness is required. In order not to lose hardness in the core region, the process temperature must not exceed 450°C.
