PROPRIETARY CHRONIFER M-15 KL Heat Treatments
- Forming: Warm: 1000 – 1100 °C, slow cooling, Slow heating up to 800°C, then fast up to the forming temperature. Microstructure at the forming temperature: Austenite + carbides. Cold: Difficult. Can be made after annealing at 740 – 840°C, slow cooling. Annealing: Soft anneal: 740 – 840°C, holding time 2 - 4h, slow furnace cooling down to 600°C UTS/Rm after annealing: about 265 HB / Hv (˜ 865 MPa). Intermediary annealing during cold forming: < 740°C, air cooling. Take care to not reduce the N content during the heat treatment procedures. The recommended minimum amount of cold work before anneal is = 10-15% reduction, in order to avoid a possible excessive grain growth. Quenching: Primary quenching: 950 – 1050°C / oil, or fast air, or gas cooling. Option: Secondary quenching by deep-freezing: -20 to -80°C/12 to 48h, preferably -80°C/12 – 24h. Alternative cryogenic secondary quenching/cooling: -196°C/6 to 12h, stepped cooling to prevent any possible cracking. The secondary quenching should be made as quickly as possible after the primary oil, air or gas quenching. Tempering: according to requirements
