SAE 7050 Tratamiento Térmico
- Overaging heat treatment: recommended practice is heating to 121°C ± 3 (250°F ± 5), holding at heat for not less than 4 hours, further heating to 174°C ± 6 (345°F ± 10), holding at heat for not less than 8 hours, and cooling in air.
- Solution heat treating at 471°C for forgings. Solution heat treating at 477°C for all others ), (to avoid stress corrosion cracking of thick 7049 parts, delay between quenching and start of aging should not exceed 72h); (solution heat treat temperatures as low as 466°C may be used to control recrystallization and surface cracking problems); (eutectic melting may occur at the specified temperature if the raw material was not properly homogenized or worked).
Solution heat treating soaking times and maximum quench delay times is on specifications.
Limits for quenching in polymer solutions for sheets, plates, bars: for thickness 2.03 mm polymer concentration is 40% max (±2); for thickness 6.35 mm polymer concentration is 34% max (±2); for thickness 9.52 mm polymer concentration is 28% max (±2); for thickness 12.70 mm polymer concentration is 22% max (±2); for thickness 25.40 mm polymer concentration is 16% max (±2). Limits for quenching in polymer solutions for forgings: for thickness 25.40 mm polymer concentration is 28-32% max (±2); for thickness 50.80 mm polymer concentration is 24-28% max (±2); for thickness 76.20 mm polymer concentration is 18-22% max (±2); for thickness 101.50 mm polymer concentration is 13-17% max (±2). Limits for quenching in polymer solutions for extrusions: for thickness 6.35 mm polymer concentration is 28% max (±2); for thickness 9.52 mm polymer concentration is 22% max (±2).
Aging treatment is mandatory. For rivets: Starting temper is AQ or W, final temper is T73 (sometimes used to designate final tempers), 1st step: aging at 121°C for 4min, 2nd step: aging at 179°C for 8min. For plates, extruded bars and shapes: Starting temper is AQ or W, final temper is T73 (sometimes used to designate final tempers), 1st step: aging at 121°C for 6-8h, 2nd step: aging at 177°C for 11.5-12.5h. For plates: Starting temper is AQ or W, final temper is T76 (sometimes used to designate final tempers), 1st step: aging at 121°C for 6-8h, 2nd step: aging at 177°C for 6.5-7h. For all forms, except plates, extruded bars and shapes: Starting temper is AQ or W, final temper is T76 (sometimes used to designate final tempers), 1st step: aging at 121°C for 6-8h, 2nd step: aging at 177°C for 3.5-4.5h. For all forms: Starting temper is AQ or W, final temper is T74 (sometimes used to designate final tempers), 1st step: aging at 121°C for 6-8h, 2nd step: aging at 177°C for 6-8h.
Full anneal: At 399-427°C, soaking time is minimum 2h (soak times listed are for up to 13 mm maximum thickness. Add 0.5 hour for each additional 13 mm of product or nested stack thickness or fraction thereof over 13 mm), cooling in furnace (furnace cool at 28°C degrees per hour maximum, to 232°C, hold at 232°C for 6 hours, furnace or air cool to room temperature). Stress relief: At 333-349°C, soaking time is minimum 2h (soak times listed are for up to 13 mm maximum thickness. Add 0.5 hour for each additional 13 mm of product or nested stack thickness or fraction thereof over 13 mm), cooling in air.
