AA 6063 Tratamiento Térmico
- The times and temperatures are typical for various forms, sizes and methods of manufacture and may not exactly describe the optimum treatment for a specific item.
The nominal temperatures at which metal is heated (applies both for solution and precipitation heat treatment) should be attained as rapidly as possible and maintained ± 5°C of nominal during the time at temperature.
The time at precipitation heat treatment temperature will depend on time required for load to reach temperature. The times shown are based on rapid heating, with soaking time measured from the time the load reached within 5°C of the applicable temperature.
Material should be quenched from the solution heat-treating temperature as rapidly as possible and with minimum delay after removal from the furnace. Quenching is typically performed by immersion of wrought products in a cold water bath, although some forgings are quenched in hot-water. Quenching may be performed by alternative means such as total immersion in an aqueous polymer solution, liquefied gas, hot water, or boiling water, or by air blast or fog to minimize distortion provided samples from the material. The use of high-velocity high-volume jets of cold water is also effective for some materials.
For extruded rod, bar, profiles and tube
Temper T1: Quenched directly from the extrusion press, naturally aged. Some extrusions may be adequately quenched using a room temperature air blast.
Temper T4: Solution heat treated at 510°C, quenched, naturally aged. By suitable control of extrusion temperature, product may be quenched directly from extrusion press to provide specified properties for this temper. Some products may be adequately quenched in air blast at room temperature.
Temper T42: Solution heat treated at 520°C, quenched, naturally aged.
Temper T5: Quenched directly from the extrusion press, precipitation heat treated at 180°C for 3 hours. Some extrusions may be adequately quenched using a room temperature air blast. An alternate treatment comprised of 1-2 hours at 205°C also may be used.
Temper T52: Quenched directly from the extrusion press, precipitation heat treated at 180°C for 3 hours. Some extrusions may be adequately quenched using a room temperature air blast.
Temper T6: Solution heat treated at 510°C, quenched, precipitation heat treated at 175°C, for 8 hours. By suitable control of extrusion temperature, product may be quenched directly from extrusion press to provide specified properties for this temper. Some products may be adequately quenched in air blast at room temperature. An alternate treatment comprised of 6 hours at 180°C also may be used.
Temper T62: Solution heat treated at 520°C, quenched, precipitation heat treated at 175°C, for 8 hours. An alternate treatment comprised of 6 hours at 180°C also may be used.
For drawn tube
Temper T4: Solution heat treated at 520°C, quenched, naturally aged.
Temper T3: Solution heat treated at 520°C, quenched, naturally aged. Cold work subsequent to solution heat treatment is required to attain the specified mechanical properties for this temper. By suitable control of extrusion temperature, product may be quenched directly from extrusion press to provide specified properties for this temper. Some products may be adequately quenched in air blast at room temperature. By definition, this temper designation is that which would apply after natural aging even though mechanical properties for this alloy-temper product have not been registered.
Temper T42: Solution heat treated at 520°C, quenched, naturally aged.
Temper T6: Solution heat treated at 520°C, quenched, precipitation heat treated at 175°C, for 8 hours.
Temper T83: Solution heat treated at 520°C, quenched, precipitation heat treated at 175°C, for 8 hours. Cold work prior to any precipitation heat treatment is required to attain the specified mechanical properties for this temper.
Temper T831: Solution heat treated at 520°C, quenched, precipitation heat treated at 175°C, for 8 hours. Cold work prior to any precipitation heat treatment is required to attain the specified mechanical properties for this temper.
Temper T832: Solution heat treated at 520°C, quenched, precipitation heat treated at 175°C, for 8 hours. Cold work prior to any precipitation heat treatment is required to attain the specified mechanical properties for this temper.
Temper T62: Solution heat treated at 520°C, quenched, precipitation heat treated at 175°C, for 8 hours.
For pipe

Some products may be adequately quenched in air blast at room temperature. An alternate treatment comprised of 6 hours at 180°C also may be used.
Annealing (O)
Heated at 415°C, held for 2-3 hours. This treatment is intended to remove effects of solution heat treatment and include cooling at a rate of about 30°C per hour from the annealing temperature to 260°C. The rate of subsequent cooling is unimportant. Treatment at 345°C, followed by uncontrolled cooling, may be used to remove the effects of cold work, or to partially remove the effects of heat treatment.
