AA 2014 Heat Treatments


  • The times and temperatures are typical for various forms, sizes and methods of manufacture and may not exactly describe the optimum treatment for a specific item.

    The nominal temperatures at which metal is heated (applies both for solution and precipitation heat treatment) should be attained as rapidly as possible and maintained ± 5°C of nominal during the time at temperature.

    The time at precipitation heat treatment temperature will depend on time required for load to reach temperature. The times shown are based on rapid heating, with soaking time measured from the time the load reached within 5°C of the applicable temperature.

    Material should be quenched from the solution heat-treating temperature as rapidly as possible and with minimum delay after removal from the furnace. Quenching is typically performed by immersion of wrought products in a cold water bath, although some forgings are quenched in hot-water. Quenching may be performed by alternative means such as total immersion in an aqueous polymer solution, liquefied gas, hot water, or boiling water, or by air blast or fog to minimize distortion provided samples from the material. The use of high-velocity high-volume jets of cold water is also effective for some materials.

    For flat sheet

    Temper T3: Solution heat treated at 500°C, quenched, naturally aged. Cold work subsequent to solution heat treatment is required to attain the specified mechanical properties for this temper.

    Temper T42: Solution heat treated at 500°C, quenched, naturally aged.

    Temper T62: Solution heat treated at 500°C, quenched, precipitation heat treated at 160°C for 18 hours.

    For coiled sheet

    Temper T4: Solution heat treated at 500°C, quenched, naturally aged.

    Temper T42: Solution heat treated at 500°C, quenched, naturally aged.

    Temper T6: Solution heat treated at 500°C, quenched, precipitation heat treated at 160°C for 18 hours.

    Temper T62: Solution heat treated at 500°C, quenched, precipitation heat treated at 160°C for 18 hours.

    For plate

    Temper T451: Solution heat treated at 500°C, quenched, naturally aged. Stress-relieved by stretching is required to produce a specified amount of permanent set subsequent to solution heat treatment.

    Temper T42: Solution heat treated at 500°C, quenched, naturally aged.

    Temper T651: Solution heat treated at 500°C, quenched, precipitation heat treated at 160°C for 18 hours. Stress-relieved by stretching is required to produce a specified amount of permanent set prior to any precipitation heat treatment.

    Temper T62: Solution heat treated at 500°C, quenched, precipitation heat treated at 160°C for 18 hours.

    For rolled or cold finished wire, rod and bar

    Temper T4: Solution heat treated at 500°C, quenched, naturally aged.

    Temper T451: Solution heat treated at 500°C, quenched, naturally aged. Stress-relieved by stretching is required to produce a specified amount of permanent set subsequent to solution heat treatment.

    Temper T42: Solution heat treated at 500°C, quenched, naturally aged.

    Temper T6: Solution heat treated at 500°C, quenched, precipitation heat treated at 160°C for 18 hours. An alternative treatment comprised of 8 hours at 175°C also may be used.

    Temper T651: Solution heat treated at 500°C, quenched, precipitation heat treated at 160°C for 18 hours. An alternative treatment comprised of 8 hours at 175°C also may be used. Stress-relieved by stretching is required to produce a specified amount of permanent set prior to any precipitation heat treatment.

    Temper T62: Solution heat treated at 500°C, quenched, precipitation heat treated at 160°C for 18 hours. An alternative treatment comprised of 8 hours at 175°C also may be used.

    For extruded wire, rod, bar, profiles and tube

    Temper T4: Solution heat treated at 500°C, quenched, naturally aged.

    Temper T4510: Solution heat treated at 500°C, quenched, naturally aged. Stress-relieved by stretching is required to produce a specified amount of permanent set subsequent to solution heat treatment.

    Temper T4511: Solution heat treated at 500°C, quenched, naturally aged. Stress-relieved by stretching is required to produce a specified amount of permanent set subsequent to solution heat treatment.

    Temper T42: Solution heat treated at 500°C, quenched, naturally aged.

    Temper T6: Solution heat treated at 500°C, quenched, precipitation heat treated at 160°C for 18 hours. An alternative treatment comprised of 8 hours at 175°C also may be used.

    Temper T62: Solution heat treated at 500°C, quenched, precipitation heat treated at 160°C for 18 hours. An alternative treatment comprised of 8 hours at 175°C also may be used.

    For drawn tube

    Temper T4: Solution heat treated at 500°C, quenched, naturally aged.

    Temper T42: Solution heat treated at 500°C, quenched, naturally aged.

    Temper T6: Solution heat treated at 500°C, quenched, precipitation heat treated at 160°C for 18 hours. An alternative treatment comprised of 8 hours at 175°C also may be used.

    For die forgings

    Temper T4: Solution heat treated at 500°C, quenched in water at 60°C to 80°C, naturally aged.

    Temper T6: Solution heat treated at 500°C, quenched in water at 60°C to 80°C, precipitation heat treated at 170°C for 10 hours.

    For hand forgings and rolled rings

    Temper T4: Solution heat treated at 500°C, quenched, naturally aged. By definition, this temper designation is that which would apply after natural aging even though mechanical properties for this alloy-temper product have not been registered.

    Temper T452: Solution heat treated at 500°C, quenched, naturally aged. Stress-relieved by 1-5 percent cold reduction subsequent to solution heat treatment. By definition, this temper designation is that which would apply after natural aging even though mechanical properties for this alloy-temper product have not been registered.

    Temper T6: Solution heat treated at 500°C, quenched, precipitation heat treated at 170°C for 10 hours.

    Temper T652: Solution heat treated at 500°C, quenched in water at 60°C to 80°C, precipitation heat treated at 170°C for 10 hours. Stress-relieved by 1-5 percent cold reduction prior to precipitation heat treatment.

    Annealing (O)

    Heated at 415°C, held for 2-3 hours. This treatment is intended to remove effects of solution heat treatment and include cooling at a rate of about 30°C per hour from the annealing temperature to 260°C. The rate of subsequent cooling is unimportant. Treatment at 345°C, followed by uncontrolled cooling, may be used to remove the effects of cold work, or to partially remove the effects of heat treatment.
