PROPRIETARY VP20ISOFS Heat Treatments
- Annealing: Heat slowly and evenly to temperatures between 760 and 800°C, at a rate of 100°C/h, keeping 1 hour for every 25 mm of the largest section of the piece. Slowly cool in an oven (30°C/h) to 600°C; then cool in calm air.
Stress Relief: After machining with large material removal, stress relief is recommended, heating the molds slowly and evenly (100°C/h) up to 530°C, keeping 0.5 hour in temperature for each 25 mm of the largest section in the part. Regardless of the section, the minimum time must be 2 hours; then cool in calm air.
Quenching: During quenching, the surface of the molds must be protected against decarburization and oxidation. Heat slowly and evenly at (100°C/h) up to 400°C and then at a maximum of 300°C/h until the austenitization temperature, between 840 and 860°C. Keep at temperature until complete homogenization of the entire piece. Cooling must be carried out in oil suitable for quenching, stirred and heated between 40 and 70°C, until the mold temperature reaches 100°C. Then cool in calm air.
Tempering: Tools should be tempered immediately after quenching, as soon as they reach 60°C. Make at least 2 tempers and between each temper the parts must cool slowly to room temperature. Tempering temperatures should be chosen as per desired hardness. The time of each tempering must be at least 2 hours. For pieces larger than 70 mm, the time must be calculated as a function of their dimension. Allow 1 hour for each inch of thickness.
Nitriding: It must be carried out after quenching and tempering, as long as the nitriding temperature is at least 50°C lower than the temperature of the last tempering.
