PROPRIETARY Carpenter Moly Ascoloy Heat Treatments
- Annealing: Heat to 1300°F (704°C), hold 4 hours at heat, then air cool. Hardness will be approximately Rockwell C 31 (290 Brinell). Structure will be tempered martensite. A double thermal cycle can be used to obtain lower hardnesses. Treat 1400°F (760°C), hold 2 hours at heat, furnace cool to 800°F (427°C), then air cool to room temperature. After this, heat to 1300°F (704°C), hold 8 hours at heat, then air cool. Hardening: Treat at 1800/1925°F (982/1052°C) one to two hours at heat, then air or oil quench. Tempering: Usually tempered in the range of 1100/1300°F (593/704°C), depending on the mechanical properties desired. For best toughness, tempering in the range 750/950°F (399/510°C) should be avoided. Solution treated 1925°F (1052°C) 30 minutes, oil quenched and tempered 2 hours.
