PROPRIETARY Ti-6Al-4V Heat Treatments
- Beta STA 677°C (1250°F); Beta STA 538°C (1000°F): Beta heat treated followed by solution treating and overaging 677°C (1250°F), or aging 538°C (1000°F).
STA 677°C (1250°F); STA 538°C (1000°F): Solution treating and overaging 677°C (1250°F), or aging 538°C (1000°F).
Mill anneal: 704-788°C (1300-1450°F) 2 hours, air cool. Recrystallization anneal bar for better ductility and fatigue strength, 954°C (1750°F) 2 hours, furnace cool.
For maximum fracture toughness and SCC resistance: Beta anneal 1066°C (1950°F) 1-2 hours, water quench. Then age 621-704°C (1150-1300°F) 2 to 4 hours, air cool.
For maximum strength: solution-treated and aged (STA) condition is:
For sheet, 913-941°C (1675-1725°F) 5 to 25 minutes, water quench. Age 524°C (975°F) 4 to 6 hours, air cool.
For bars and forgings, 913-941°C (1675-1725°F) 1 hour, water quench. Age 524-552°C (975-1025°F) 3 hours, air cool.
For increased fracture toughness, but lower tensile strength: precipitation treat (overage) 621-677°C (1150-1250°F) 4 hours, air cool.
Stress relief: annealing is commonly 538-649°C (1000-1200°F) 1 to 4 hours, air cool. - Mill anneal: 705-790°C (1300-1450°F) for 1-4 hrs air cool (or equivalent);
Solution treatment and age: 940-970°C (1725-1775°F) for 10 min - water quench (or equivalent) + 480-595°C (900-1100°F) for 2-8 hrs, air cool (or equivalent)
Stress relief: 480-650°C (900-1200°F) for 1-4 hrs - air cool (or equivalent);
Beta anneal: 1035°C (1900°F) for 30 min. - air cool + 730°C (1350°F) for 2 hrs - air cool
