SAE Ti-6Al-4V Heat Treatments
- Annealing (for bars, wire, forgings, and rings):
Heated to a temperature within the range 704 to 788°C (1300 to 1450°F), held at the selected temperature within ± 14°C (± 25°F) for not less than one hour, and cooled at a rate which will produce showed mechanical properties.
Solution and precipitation heat treatment:
Heated in a suitable atmosphere to 954°C ± 14°C (1750 F ± 25 °F), held at heat for 1 to 2.2 hours, and quenched in agitated water and precipitation heat treated by heating to 538°C ± 8 °C (1000°F ± 15°F), held at heat for 4 to 8 hours, and cooled in air. When permitted by purchaser, other heat treatments may be used but the entire product of each lot shall be given the same heat treatment. - Hot isostatic press: Processed in inert atmosphere at not less than 100 MPa (14.5 ksi) within the range 899 to 954°C (1650 to 1750°F), held at the selected temperature within ± 14°C (± 25°F) for 2 to 4 hours, and cooled under inert atmosphere in the autoclave to below 427°C (800°F).
Anneal: Processed in vacuum or inert atmosphere at a temperature within the range 704 to 843°C (1300 to 1550°F), held at the selected temperature within ± 14°C (± 25°F) for 2 to 4 hours, and cooled in the furnace to below 538°C (1000°F).
