SAE 6061 Heat Treatments
- Bars, rods, and wire under 12.70 mm in nominal diameter or least distance between parallel sides shall be solution and precipitation heat treated to the -T6 temper.
Bars and rods 12.70 to 203.20 mm, inclusive, in nominal diameter or least distance between parallel sides, shall be solution heat treated, stress-relieved by stretching to produce a nominal permanent set of 1-1/2% but not less than 1% nor more than 3%, and precipitation heat treated to -T651 temper. - Solution heat treating at 529°C for all forms (an alternate solution heat treating temperature of 535°C may be used).
Solution heat treating soaking times and maximum quench delay times is on specifications.
Limits for quenching in polymer solutions for sheets, plates, bars, extrusions: for thickness 6.35 mm polymer concentration is 40% max (±2); for thickness 9.52 mm polymer concentration is 32% max (±2); for thickness 25.40 mm polymer concentration is 22% max (±2). Limits for quenching in polymer solutions for tubing: for thickness 4.78 mm polymer concentration is 22% max (±2). For all forms (aging treatment is mandatory): Starting temper is AQ or W, final temper is T4 or T42 (sometimes used to designate final tempers), aging at room temperatures. For all forms (aging treatment is preferred): Starting temper is T4, final temper is T6 (sometimes used to designate final tempers), aging at 177°C for 8-10h. For all forms (aging treatment is alternate): Starting temper is T42, final temper is T62 (sometimes used to designate final tempers), aging at 160°C for 18-34h. When temper before furnace aging is AQ, W, T4 or T42, the furnace aging treatment may be started immediately after quenching or at any time thereafter.
Full anneal: At 399-427°C, soaking time is minimum 1h (soak times listed are for up to 13 mm maximum thickness. Add 0.5 hour for each additional 13 mm of product or nested stack thickness or fraction thereof over 13 mm), cooling in furnace (furnace cool at 28°C degrees per hour maximum, to 260°C, air cool to room temperature or furnace cool at 28°C degrees per hour maximum, to 232°C, hold at 232°C for 6 hours, furnace or air cool to room temperature). Stress relief: At 333-349°C, soaking time is minimum 0.5h (soak times listed are for up to 13 mm maximum thickness. Add 0.5 hour for each additional 13 mm of product or nested stack thickness or fraction thereof over 13 mm), cooling in air.
