SAE 2024 Heat Treatments
- Solution heat treating at 493°C for all forms.
Limits for quenching in polymer solutions for sheets, extrusions and tubing: for thickness 1.02 mm polymer concentration is 34% max (±2); for thickness 1.60 mm polymer concentration is 28% max (±2); for thickness 1.80 mm polymer concentration is 22% max (±2); for thickness 2.03 mm polymer concentration is 16% max (±2). Limits for quenching in polymer solutions for tubing: for thickness 4.78 mm polymer concentration is 16% max (±2).
Aging treatment is mandatory: Starting temper is AQ, W, final temper is T42 (sometimes used to designate final tempers), aging at room temperatures for 18-20h, for all forms. For sheets, plates and drawn tubes: Starting temper is T3 or T351, final temper is T81 or T851 (sometimes used to designate final tempers), aging at 191°C for 12-13h; Starting temper is T361, final temper is T861 (sometimes used to designate final tempers), aging at 191°C for 8-9h; Starting temper is T42, final temper is T62 (sometimes used to designate final tempers), aging at 191°C for 9-12h; Starting temper is T42, final temper is T72 (sometimes used to designate final tempers), aging at 191°C for 16-18h. For forgings, Starting temper is T4 or T352, final temper is T62 or T852 (sometimes used to designate final tempers), aging 191°C for 12-13h. For wires and rolled bar, Starting temper is T351 or T4, final temper is T851 or T6 (sometimes used to designate final tempers), aging 191°C for 12-13h. For extruded bars and shapes, Starting temper is T351X or T4 or T42, final temper is T851X or T6 or T62 (sometimes used to designate final tempers), aging 191°C for 12-13h. When temper before furnace aging is T4 or T42, the furnace aging treatment may be started immediately after quenching or at any time thereafter.
Full anneal: At 399-427°C, soaking time is minimum 1h (soak times listed are for up to 13 mm maximum thickness. Add 0.5 hour for each additional 13 mm of product or nested stack thickness or fraction thereof over 13 mm), cooling in furnace (furnace cool at 28°C degrees per hour maximum, to 260°C, air cool to room temperature or furnace cool at 28°C degrees per hour maximum, to 232°C, hold at 232°C for 6 hours, furnace or air cool to room temperature). Stress relief: At 333-349°C, soaking time is minimum 0.5h (soak times listed are for up to 13 mm maximum thickness. Add 0.5 hour for each additional 13 mm of product or nested stack thickness or fraction thereof over 13 mm), cooling in air.
Solution heat treating soaking times and maximum quench delay times is on specifications. - The recommended precipitation heat aging treatment is 185 to 196°C (365 to 385°F) for 8 hours.
