PROPRIETARY VHSUPER Heat Treatments

  • Recommendations to improve tool life: Slowly preheat between 200 and 300°C before starting operation. Carry out periodic stress relief throughout the tool life.

Stress relief: Must be performed after machining and before hardening. The relief procedure should involve slow heating to temperatures between 500 and 600°C and oven cooling to a temperature of 200°C. If applied after work, stress relief must be carried out at a temperature 50°C lower than the temperature of the last temper.

Quenching: The heat for quenching should be between 1010 and 1030°C. It is recommended to pre-warm the tools.
    Cool in:
    a) Appropriate oil with agitation and heated between 40 and 70°C.
    b) Salt bath kept between 500 and 550°C.
Can be tempered in a vacuum oven.

Tempering: The tools must be tempered immediately after tempering, as soon as they reach 60°C. Do at least 2 tempers and between each temper the parts must cool slowly to room temperature. Tempering temperatures 550 and 650°C, depending on the desired hardness. The time of each tempering must be at least 2 hours. For pieces larger than 70 mm, the time must be calculated as a function of their dimension. Allow 1 hour for each mm of thickness.

Nitriding: It must be carried out after quenching and tempering, as long as the nitriding temperature is at least 50°C lower than the temperature of the last tempering.
