PROPRIETARY CarTech Micro-Melt 431 Stainless Heat Treatments
- Annealing: Heat uniformly at 650-677°C (1200-1250°F), remove charge from furnace and cool in air.
Hardening: Heat at 982-1066°C (1800-1950°F), soak at heat, quench in oil or utilizing a rapid gas quench. This grade will also harden by cooling in air. A cold treatment, -80°C for at least 2 hours, can be conducted with minimal delay after hardening and before tempering to increase hardness and strength.
Tempering: Soak at heat at least 1 hour and longer for larger pieces, cool in air. Tempering at 371-565°C (700-1050°F) results in decreased impact strength and corrosion resistance.
