PROPRIETARY CarTech CTS BD4P Alloy Heat Treatments

  • Annealing: Steel should be annealed in the neutral atmosphere. Heat uniformly at 871-899°C (1600-1650°F), then cool very slowly in the furnace at a rate of not more than 11°C (20°F) degrees per hour until the furnace is black. The furnace can then be turned off and allowed to cool naturally.

Hardening: Preheat at 760-816°C (1400-1500°F), then increase temperature to 1038-1093°C (1900-2000°F), soak for 30 minutes, quench in warm oil or cool in air. Do not overheat.

Tempering: Alloy can be tempered over a range of temperatures from 177-427°C (350°F-800°F), soaked at least 2 hours then air cooled to room temperature. The specific tempering treatment chosen will depend upon a number of factors including the austenitizing temperature utilized, application of refrigeration treatment and the desired combination of final hardness, toughness and corrosion resistance. Double tempering is recommended. Tempering at 427-593°C (800-1100°F) will reduce toughness and corrosion resistance.

Sub-zero cooling: After hardening, the alloy should be refrigerated at -73/-84°C (-100/-120°F) for at least 1 hour then warmed to room temperature prior to tempering to minimize retained austenite. Refrigeration is most effective when performed within 2 hours after the austenitizing treatment.
