MIL AM355 Heat Treatments
- Cold rolled and tempered condition obtained by tempering at 454°C to 510°C subsequent to final cold rolling; Heat treated: Heating to 932°+/-4°C, held at heat for not less than 45 min. per 25.4 mm of thickness, quenched in water or otherwise quenched very rapidly to room temperature, cooled to -73°C or lower, held at this temperature for not less than 3 hours, warmed to room temperature, heated to either 538°C or 454°+/-12°C, held at temperature for not less than 3 hours nor more than 4 hours, and air cooled to room temperature.
- Solution treatment at 1900°F. Hold 90 minutes minimum for forgings, bars, plates. Quench in water, oil or polymer; Austenitized (T): at 1710°F and hold 15 minutes per inch of thickness and quench in air. Transformation treatment at 1400°F, min. hold 180 min. (cool to below 60°F); Austenitized (SCT): at 1800°F, hold 120 min. and quench in air. Transformation treatment at -100°F, min. hold 180 min. (for castings only); For wrought products only: Austenitized (SCT) at 1710°F, hold 10 minutes plus 1 minute for each 0.01 inch thickness and quench in water or oil. Transformation treatment at -100°F, min. immediately after water quenching, after austenite conditioning. Minimum hold 180 min.
