MIL 4130 Heat Treatments
- Normalizing temperature range 1600-1700°F, air quenched; Annealing temperature range 1500-1600°F; Furnace cool to 1000°F or below; (Recommended subcritical anneal temperature is 1250°F); Austenitizing temperature range 1550-1600°F; Medium for quenching: oil, water or polymer.
- Response to thermal treatment: Method for material t<=0.250 inch. Specimens measuring 1 by 2 inches shall be cut from the samples, quenched in oil 1600°+/-10°F, and tempered at not less than 900°F for 30 min. at heat. Method for material from 0.251 < t <= 1.5 inches. Specimens 1 inch wide by 3 inches in length shall be quenched in oil from 1600°+/-10°F. They shall then be sectioned at the midpoint of and normal to the longitudinal axis. Preparation: Specimens shall be austenitized for a sufficient time and water quenched from 1600°+/-10°F.
