PROPRIETARY AerMet 100 Alloy Heat Treatments

  • Normalizing: heating to 899°C (1650°F) holding for one hour and air cooling to room temperature. Optimum softening for machining is obtained by following the 899°C (1650°F) normalize with a 16h 677°C (1250°F) overage anneal.
Annealing: softened by using a 677°C (1250°F) overage anneal for 16h. The optimum annealed hardness of 40 HRC maximum is obtained following this anneal.
    Solution treatment: at a range 885°C ±14°C (1625°F ±25°F) for 1h.
Quenching: water quenching is not recommended; cooled from the solution treatment temperature to 66°C (150°F) in 1 to 2h to develop optimum properties. Individual sections larger than 50.8mm diameter or 25.4mm thick (plate) must be quenched with oil in order to obtain 66°C (150°F) in 1 to 2h. Individual sections up to 50.8mm diameter or 25.4mm thick (plate) will air cool to 66°C (150°F) in 1 to 2h. The cooling rate of the furnace load must be monitored by a thermocouple attached to the hottest spot in the load to ensure that the 2h cool to 66°C (150°F) is obtained.
Cold treatment: cooled to -73°C (-100°F) and held for 1 hour.
Straightening: a low temperature stress relief at 177/204°C (350/400°F) for 5 hours following the refrigeration operation will provide an optimal combination of ductility and yield strength.
Aging: at 482°C ±6°C (900°F ±10°F) for 5 hours; parts should never be aged at a temperature below 468°C (875°F).
