PROPRIETARY AerMet-for-Tooling Alloy Heat Treatments

  • Normalizing: can be normalized after forging by heating to 899°C (1650°F), holding for one hour and air cooling to room temperature.
Annealing: softened by using a 677°C (1250°F) overage anneal for 16h. Solution Treatment: range for heat treaters with deep freeze capability is 885 ± 14°C (1625 ± 25°F) for 1 hour. For heat treaters lacking deep freeze capability, the solution treatment temperature is 913 ± 14°C (1675 ± 25°F) for 30 minutes plus 5 minutes per 25.4 mm of thickness. Quenching: it is an air hardening grade and should be cooled slowly; cooling to 204°C (400°F) in less than 10 minutes is not recommended; therefore, water quenching is not recommended; Proper quenching practice is essential, it should be cooled from to 66°C (150°F) in 1 to 2h to develop optimum properties. Individual sections larger than 50.8 mm in diameter or 25.4 mm thick (plate) must be quenched with oil in order to obtain 66°C (150°F) in 1 to 2h. Individual sections up to 50.8 mm diameter or 25.4 mm thick (plate) will air cool to 66°C (150°F) in 1 to 2h. Cold Treatment: cooled to -73°C (-100°F) and hold for 1 hour. Straightening: a low temperature stress relief at 177/204°C (350/400°F) for 5h following the refrigeration operation will provide an optimal combination of ductility and yield strength. Ageing: at 482 ± 6°C (900°F ± 10°F) for 5 hours; for those parts that have not been deep frozen, a double age at 482 ± 6°C (900°F ± 10°F) for 2.5 hr + 2.5 hr is necessary; Parts alloy should never be aged at a temperature below 468°C (875°F).
