SAE 51410 Heat Treatments
- Hardening: Heat to 954°C ± 6°C (1750°F ± 10°F), hold at heat for 60 minutes ± 5 minutes per 25 mm of maximum cross section, cool at a rate equivalent to air cool.
Tempering: Heat to 732°C ± 8°C (1350°F ± 15°F), hold at heat for 60 minutes ± 5 minutes per 25 mm of maximum cross section and cool in air. - Heat to 996°C ± 14°C (1825°F ± 25°F), hold at heat for not less than 1 hour, and cool to room temperature. Cooling rate between 843 and 538°C (1550 and 1000°F) shall be 28°C (50°F) degrees per minute or faster, except liquid quenching is prohibited. Temper at 546°C ± 8°C (1015°F ± 15°F) for not less than 1 hour and cool.
