SS 29 40 Heat Treatments

  • Normalization: 870-920°C. Free cooling.
Relaxation annealing: 525 - 650°C. For hardened condition 25 - 50°C lower temperature than tempering temperature (but above the nitriding temperature). For soft annealed condition 600 - 650°C. Holding time 0.5 - 2 h. Cooling with the oven to 450°C, then free cooling.
    Soft annealing: 700 - 730°C. Holding time 2 h. Cooling max 15°C / h to 600°C, then free cooling.
Hardening: Cooling in oil from 880 - 920°C. Tempering should take place immediately after cooling. Tempering temperature 570 - 650°C and holding time are adapted to the dimension and desired strength.
Nitriding: 500 - 520°C. The holding time is adjusted to the desired nitriding depth. The surface hardness after nitriding becomes HV approx. 1000. Long-term nitration (60 h) does not affect the core strength if the tempering temperature at the hardening has been at least 570°C.
