SS 25 41 Heat Treatments
- Forging: 1150 - 850 °C.
Relaxation annealing: 525 - 650°C. For hardened condition 25 - 50°C lower temperature than tempering temperature. For soft-annealed condition 600 - 650°C, 0.5 - 2 h. Cooling in oven to 450°C, then free cooling.
Soft annealed (-02): 690 - 720°C, 2 h. Cooling max 15°C / h to 600°C, then free cooling.
Hardening: Cooling in oil from 830 - 860°C. Tempering should take place immediately after cooling. Tempering temperature 550 - 675°C and holding time are adapted to dimension and desired strength. During hardening (condition -06) the steel is usually annealed at 200 - 250°C. Tempering temperature 300 - 500°C should be avoided (risk of tarnishing).
Surface hardening: The steel can be used for flame and induction hardening, whereby the surface hardness becomes HRC 51-57 for water cooling and subsequent annealing at 150 - 200°C.
