SAE WE54A Heat Treatments

  • Solution heat treatment
Heated at 965-985°F (518-529°C). Incremental steps or a uniform heating rate shall be used to prevent eutectic melting which can irreversibly damage castings. A protective atmosphere containing sufficient sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide, or satisfactory oxidation inhibitor shall be used when solution heat treating at or above 750°F (399°C). Recommended soaking time is 6-8 hours (soaking time starts when all temperature control sensing elements are within 10°F (6°C) of the set or offset temperature). Heavy section castings, t ≥ 25.4 mm, may require longer soaking time than indicated. Parts should be quenched after being soaked at the solution heat treating temperature. During the quench, the quenchant temperature shall not rise more than 25°F (14°C).
    Aging (precipitation heat treatment)
Temper T6 - artificial aging from the solution heat treated (T4) temper. Heated for 10-20 hours at 480°F (249°C). Protective atmosphere is not required.
  • Castings shall be heated to a temperature not exceeding 529°C (985°F), held at heat for the proper time for solution heat treatment, and quenched as required, reheated to a temperature between 243 - 254°C (470 - 490°F), and held at heat for the proper time for precipitation heat treatment. At least one set of tensile specimens shall, during each stage of heat treatment, be put into a batch-type furnace with each load of castings or into a continuous furnace at intervals of not longer than three hours.
    Tensile properties at 249°C (480°F) are obtained after heating specimens to 249 ± 3°C (480 ± 5°F), held at heat for not less than 10 minutes before testing and testing at 249 ± 3°C (480 ± 5°F)
