SAE MP159 Heat Treatments
- Bars shall be solution heat treated by heating to a temperature within the range 1038 to 1052°C (1900 to 1925°F), holding at the selected temperature within ± 14°C (± 25°F) for 4 to 8 hours, and quenching in water. After cold drawing, bars shall be aged by heating to a temperature within the range 649 to 677°C (1200 to 1250°F), holding at the selected temperature within ± 14°C (± 25°F) for not less than 4 hours, and cooling at a rate equivalent to an air cool or faster.
- Bars shall be solution heat treated by heating to a temperature within the range 1038 to 1052°C (1900 to 1925°F), holding at the selected temperature within ± 14°C (± 25°F) for 4 to 8 hours, and quenching in water.
After aging: Bars in nominal diameter of 44.4 mm and under, solution heat treated and cold drawn, shall be aging by heating to a temperature within the range 649 to 677°C (1200 to 1250°F), holding at the selected temperature within ± 14°C (± 25°F) for 4 to 4-1/2 hours, and cooling at a rate equivalent to an air cool.
