DTD 5192 Heat Treatments
- Softening treatment:
- Heat at a temperature between 960°C and 980°C, furnace cool to a temperature of 660°C, hold for not less than 48 hours and cool in still air.
- Rolled bars. heat at a temperature between 800°C and 820°C, cool in the furnace at a rate not exceeding 15°C per hour down to a temperature below 550°C and then cool in still air.
Final heat treatment:
Hardening.
(a) Pre-heat as necessary at a temperature between 600°C and 650°C.
(b) For limiting ruling sections up to 25 mm (1 in). Heat at a temperature between 910°C and 930°C and cool in air or quench in oil.
(c) For limiting ruling sections of 25 mm (1 in) and above. Heat at a temperature between 910°C and 930°C and quench in oil.
Sub-zero treat for 2 hours minimum at a temperature below -70°C. The cooling rate, over the range -40°C to -70°C shall not exceed 25°C per hour.
Temper by heating at a temperature in excess of 300°C.
