PROPRIETARY Böhler-Uddeholm D2 Heat Treatments
- Soft annealing: Protect the steel and heat through to 850°C. Then cool in the furnace at 10°C per hr to 650°C, then freely in air.
Stress relieving: After rough machining the tool should be heated through to 650°C, holding time 2 hr. Cool slowly to 500°C, then freely in air.
Hardening: Preheating temperature: 650-750°C. Austenitizing temperature: 990-1050°C, but usually 1000-1040°C.
Hardness before tempering approx. 63 HRC (at 990°C, soaking time 60 min.);
Hardness before tempering approx. 64 HRC (at 1010°C, soaking time 45 min.);
Hardness before tempering approx. 65 HRC (at 1030°C, soaking time 30 min.)
*Soaking time -time at hardening temperature after the tool is fully heated through. Protect the part against decarburization and oxidation during hardening.
Quenching media: Oil (Only very simple geometries); Vacuum (high speed gas); Forced air/gas; Martempering bath or fluidized bed at 180-500°C, then cooling in air. Note: Temper the tool as soon as its temperature reaches 50-70°C. Typically hardens through in most standard sizes.
