SAE HP 9-4-20 Heat Treatments
- Annealed: heating to 677 ± 14°C (1250 ± 25°F), holding at heat for 4 ± 0.25 hours, cooling to room temperature in air or other atmosphere at a rate equivalent to an air cool, reheating to 621 ± 14°C (1150 ± 25°F), holding at heat for 4 ± 0.25 hours, and cooling to room temperature in air or other atmosphere at a rate equivalent to an air cool. Pyrometry shall be in accordance with AMS2750.
Normalized (prior to annealing): heating to 899 ± 14°C (1650 ± 25°F), holding at heat for not less than 1 hour per 25 mm of maximum thickness but not less than 1 hour, and cooling to room temperature in air or other atmosphere at a rate equivalent to an air cool.
Hardening: heat to 829 ± 14°C (1525 ± 25°F), hold at heat for 1 hour per 25 mm of maximum section thickness but not less than 1 hour, and quench in oil at 16 to 66°C (60 to 150°F), cool within 2 hours after quenching to -68°C (-90 °F) or below for not less than 2 hours, and warm to room temperature.
Tempering: heat to 566 ± 14°C (1050 ± 25°F), hold at heat for not less than 4 hours, and cool in air to room temperature. - Annealing: Heat to 677°C ± 14°C (1250°F ± 25°F), holding at heat for 4 hours ± 0.25 hour, air cool to room temperature, reheating to 621°C ± 14°C (1150°F ± 25°F), hold at heat for 8 hours ± 0.25 hour and cool in air to room temperature
Normalizing: When specified by the purchaser, normalize prior to annealing by heating to 899°C ± 14°C (1650°F ± 25°F), holding at heat for not less than 1 h/25 mm of maximum thickness but not less than 1 hour, and cooling in air to room temperature.
1. Normalized at 899°C ± 14°C (1650°F ± 25°F). Time at temperature: 1 h/25 mm of maximum cross-section. Normalizing may be omitted if the product was supplied normalized and annealed.
2. Cool in air to room temperature.
Hardened at 829°C ± 14°C (1525°F ± 25°F). Time at temperature: 1 h/25 mm of maximum cross-section, but not less than 1 hour.
4.Quenching in oil or water
5.Subzero cool at -68°C (-90°F) or lower within 2 hours. Time at temperature: not less than 2 hours.
6. Warm in air to room temperature
7. Temper (1), within 2 hours of reaching room temperature at 557°C ± 8°C (1035°F ± 15°F). Time at temperature: 2 h/25 mm) of maximum cross-section, but not less than 2 hours. If the first temper cannot be performed within 2 hours of subzero treatment, a snap temper may be performed at 177 to 232°C (350 to 450°F) for 2 h/25 mm of thickness. Then perform double temper steps 7 through 10.
8. Cool to approximately 52°C (125°F) or lower.
9. Temper (2) at 557°C ± 8°C (1035°F ± 15°F). Time at temperature: 2 h/25 mm of maximum cross-section, but not less than 2 hours.
10. Cool in air to room temperature.
