PROPRIETARY 154CM Heat Treatments

  • Annealing: Heat to 900°C (1650°F), hold 2 hours, slow cool no faster than 15°C (25°F) per hour to 650°C (1200°F), then furnace cool or cool in still air to room temperature. Can be cycle annealed by heating to 870°C (1600°F), hold 2 hours, cool to 704°C (1300°F), hold 4 hours, then air cool.
Stress Relieving Annealed Parts: Heat to 595–705°C (1100–1300°F), hold 2 hours, then furnace cool or cool in still air.
Hardened Parts: Heat to 15–30°C (25–50°F) below the original tempering temperature, hold 2 hours, then furnace cool or cool in still air.
Hardening Preheat: Heat to 760°C (1400°F), equalize.
Austenitize: Heat to 1037–1093°C (1900–2000°F), hold for 30–60 minutes.
Quench: Oil or positive pressure (minimum 4 bar) to below 50°C (125°F), or salt quench to about 540°C (1000°F), then air cool to below 50°C (125°F). Salt bath treatment, if practical, will ensure the maximum attainable toughness for a given hardening treatment.
Temper: Temper twice at 204–650°C (400–1200°F), for a minimum of 2 hours each time. Tempering at 425–600°C (800–1100°F) will result in sensitization, which causes a minor reduction in both corrosion resistance and toughness so this tempering range should be avoided.
