PROPRIETARY CarTech TrimRite Heat Treatments

  • Annealing: Heat uniformly to 732-760°C (1350-1400°F) for 2-4 hours on heat - remove from furnace and cool to room temperature. The hardness will be approx. Rockwell B 88/90 or equivalent. For lowest hardness (Rockwell B 82/87) heat to 850°C (1560°F) 1-2 hours on heat, cool in the furnace at a rate not exceeding 28°C (50°F) per hour to 650°C (1200°F), and then remove from the furnace and cool in air to room temperature.

Hardening: For the max. attainable hardness of Rockwell C 49/52 the alloy should be heated to 1040°C (1900°F) and rapidly cooled to room temperature by quenching in oil or by forced air or gas cooling. 15 minutes on heat at 1040°C (1900°F) is generally adequate for screws, clips, pins, wire and other small parts. A longer time (up to a max. of about 1 hour) is required for larger sections. When heat treating in a protective atmosphere, nitrogen or argon with a dew point no higher than -40°C (-40°F) is suggested. Dissociated ammonia is considered unsuitable because of the risk of nitriding the work and the resulting reduction in corrosion resistance.

For bars: Hardened at 1038°C (1900°F) for half an hour, oil quenched. Tempered for 2 hours, air cooled.
For strips: Hardened at 1038°C (1900°F) for half an hour, air cooled. Tempered for 2 hours, air cooled.

Tempering: 1-2 hours at 177-204°C (350-400°F). When less than max. hardness is required parts may be tempered up to 316°C (600°F).
