SAE 5893 Heat Treatments
- Solution heat treatment: Heating to a temperature within the range of 968 to 1010°C (1775 to 1850°F), holding at the selected temperature within +/- 14°C (+/- 25°F) for a time commensurate with section thickness and cooling at a rate equivalent to a still air cool.
Re-Solution and precipitation heat treatment: Heating to 982 +/- 14°C (1800 +/- 25°F), holding at heat for 60 +/- 15 minutes, and cooling at a rate equivalent to an air cool and precipitation heat treated by heating to 746 +/- 8°C (1375 +/- 15°F), holding at heat for 4 +/- 0.5 hours, cooling at a maximum rate of 56°C (100°F) per hour to 621 +/- 8°C (1150 +/- 15°F), holding at heat for 4 +/- 0.5 hours, and cooling at a rate equivalent to an air cool.
Response to Heat treatment at 649°C (1200°F): Heating to 649 +/- 3°C (1200 +/- 5°F), holding at heat for 20 to 30 minutes before testing, and tested at 649 +/- 3°C (1200 +/- 5°F).
