SAE 5892 Heat Treatments
- Solution heat treat by heating to 982°C ± 14°C (1800°F ± 25°F), holding at heat for a time commensurate with section thickness and cooling at a rate equivalent to an air cool.
Re-solution and precipitation treat by heating to 982°C ± 14°C (1800°F ± 25°F), holding at heat for 60 minutes ± 15 minutes, and cooling at a rate equivalent to an air cool and precipitation heat treat by heating to 746°C ± 8°C (1375°F ± 15°F), holding at heat for 4 hours ± 30 minutes, cooling at a maximum rate of 55°C (100°F) per hour to 621°C ± 8°C (1150°F ± 15°F), holding at heat for 4 hours ± 30 minutes and cooling at a rate equivalent to air cool.
For elevated temperatures testing, specimens were heated at 649°C ± 3°C (1200°F ± 5°F), held for 20-30 minutes and tested at 649°C ± 3°C (1200°F ± 5°F)
