SAE A286 Heat Treatments

  • Solution heat treated:
Heating to 982°C ± 14°C (1800°F ± 25°F), holding at heat for a time commensurate with section thickness, and quenching in oil or water or at an equivalent rate, and work-strengthened.
    Precipitation Heat Treatment:
Heating to a temperature within the range 649 to 704°C (1200 to 1300°F), holding at the selected temperature within ±14°C (±25°F) for not less than 8 hours and cooling in air.
  • Solution heat treated by heating to 899°C ± 14°C (1650°F ± 25°F), held at heat for a time commensurate with cross-sectional thickness and quenched in oil, water or other medium acceptable to the purchaser, except that product 6.35 mm (0.250 inch) and under in nominal diameter or least distance between parallel sides may be air cooled from the solution heat treating temperature.
Precipitation heat treated by heating to 718°C ± 8°C (1325°F ± 15°F), held at heat for not less than 16 hours, and cooled in air.
