EN 20MnB5 Heat Treatments

  • Austenitizing (quenching in water): 880-920°C, (at least 30 min). NOTE: The temperatures at the lower end of the range are generally applicable to hardening in water and those at the upper end for hardening in oil. Synthetic quenchants may also be used; Tempering: 400-600°C, (at least 60 min); End quench test: 900±5°C.
  • Hardening: 880-920°C (Temperatures at the lower end of the range are generally used for water, and those at the upper end for oil quenching; Time for austenitizing as a guide: at least 30 min.);
    Quenching agent: Water (When choosing the quenching agent, the influence of other parameters, such as shape, dimensions and quenching temperature, on properties and crack susceptibility, should be taken into account. Other quenching agents such as synthetic quenchants may also be used.);
    Tempering: 400-600°C (Time for tempering as a guide: at least 60 min.);
    End quench test austenitizing: 900 ± 5°C (Time for austenitizing as a guide: 30-35 min.). The given conditions are for guidance. However, the temperatures specified for the end quench test are mandatory.
