DIN 1.8988 Heat Treatments

  • If, due to regulations or for constructional reasons, stress relief annealing is necessary, it should be carried out at 530-580°C. If, in special cases, a higher temperature is to be used, the temperature must be 30°C lower than the actual tempering temperature, with a holding time of no more than 60 minutes.
  • Normalizing or hardening: heat at 880°C to 940°C, after reaching the temperature in the entire cross section, cool in water or oil.
Tempering: heat at 600°C to 730°C, hold for at least 30 minutes, cool in air.
Stress relief annealing: heat at 530°C to 580°C, hold at least 15 minutes for thickness 15 mm and under; 30 minutes at least for thickness 15 - 30 mm; 60 minutes at least for thickness 30 - 50 mm, and cool in air.
