Introduction to ASTM Standards and Designation System

ASTM International develops widely recognized standards for materials and products used in the steel industry. The ASTM designation system for metals uses a letter to indicate the material family—A for ferrous materials—followed by an arbitrarily assigned sequential number. For example, ASTM A548 refers to cold-heading quality carbon steel wire used for tapping or sheet metal screws.
