AA 7475 Traitement thermique
- The times and temperatures are typical for various forms, sizes and methods of manufacture and may not exactly describe the optimum treatment for a specific item.
The nominal temperatures at which metal is heated (applies both for solution and precipitation heat treatment) should be attained as rapidly as possible and maintained ± 5°C of nominal during the time at temperature.
The time at precipitation heat treatment temperature will depend on time required for load to reach temperature. The times shown are based on rapid heating, with soaking time measured from the time the load reached within 5°C of the applicable temperature.
Material should be quenched from the solution heat-treating temperature as rapidly as possible and with minimum delay after removal from the furnace. Quenching is typically performed by immersion of wrought products in a cold water bath, although some forgings are quenched in hot-water. Quenching may be performed by alternative means such as total immersion in an aqueous polymer solution, liquefied gas, hot water, or boiling water, or by air blast or fog to minimize distortion provided samples from the material. The use of high-velocity high-volume jets of cold water is also effective for some materials.
For sheet
Without adequate thermal pretreatment, melting may occur at solution heat treating temperature.
Temper W: Solution heat treated at 480°C, quenched, naturally aged.
Temper T61: Solution heat treated at 480°C, quenched, a two-stage treatment comprises of 120°C for 3 hours plus 160°C for 3 hours.
Temper T761: Solution heat treated at 480°C, quenched, a two-stage treatment comprises of 120°C for 3 hours plus 165°C for 10 hours.
For plate
Without adequate thermal pretreatment, melting may occur at solution heat treating temperature.
Temper W51: Solution heat treated at 480°C, quenched, naturally aged. Stress-relieved by stretching is required to produce a specified amount of permanent set subsequent to solution heat treatment.
Temper T651: Solution heat treated at 480°C, quenched, precipitation heat treated at 115°C for 24 hours. Stress-relieved by stretching is required to produce a specified amount of permanent set prior to any precipitation heat treatment.
Temper T7351: Solution heat treated at 480°C, quenched, a two-stage treatment comprised of 4–8 hours at 210°C followed by 24-30 hours at 160°C. Stress-relieved by stretching is required to produce a specified amount of permanent set prior to any precipitation heat treatment.
Temper T7651: Solution heat treated at 480°C, quenched, a two-stage treatment comprised of 4–8 hours at 120°C followed by 26-32 hours at 155°C. Stress-relieved by stretching is required to produce a specified amount of permanent set prior to any precipitation heat treatment.
For rod
Temper W: Solution heat treated at 480°C, quenched, naturally aged.
Temper T62: Solution heat treated at 480°C, quenched, a two-stage treatment comprises of 120°C for 3 hours plus 165°C for 3 hours.
Annealing (O)
Heated at 415°C, held for 2-3 hours. This treatment is intended to remove the effects of solution heat treatment and includes cooling at an uncontrolled rate to 205°C or less, followed by reheating to 230°C for 4 hours. Treatment at 345°C, followed by uncontrolled cooling, may be used to remove the effects of cold work, or to partially remove the effects of heat treatment.
