SAE WE43A Heat Treatments

  • Solution heat treatment
Heated at 965-985°F (518-529°C). Incremental steps or a uniform heating rate shall be used to prevent eutectic melting which can irreversibly damage castings. A protective atmosphere containing sufficient sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide, or satisfactory oxidation inhibitor shall be used when solution heat treating at or above 750°F (399°C). Recommended soaking time is 4-8 hours (soaking time starts when all temperature control sensing elements are within 10°F (6°C) of the set or offset temperature). Heavy section castings, t ≥ 25.4 mm, may require longer soaking time than indicated. Parts should be quenched after being soaked at the solution heat treating temperature. During the quench, the quenchant temperature shall not rise more than 25°F (14°C).
    Aging (precipitation heat treatment)
Temper T6 - artificial aging from the solution heat treated (T4) temper. Heated for 10-20 hours at 480°F (249°C). Protective atmosphere is not required.
    Rework solution heat treatment
Heated at 950°F (510°C). Recommended soaking time is 1-2 hours.
  • At least one set of tensile specimens shall, during each stage of heat treatment, be put into a batch-type furnace with each load of castings or into a continuous furnace at intervals of no longer than 3 hours.
Tensile properties at 248°C are obtained by heating the specimens to 248 ± 2.8°C (480 ± 5°F), holding at heat for not less than 10 minutes before testing, and tested at 248 ± 2.8°C (480 ± 5°F).
