Stress relieve for dimensional stability as follows: (1) Hold at 413 ± 14°C (775 ± 25°F) for 5 h. Then (2) furnace cool to 343°C (650°F) for 2 or more h. Then (3) furnace cool to 232°C (450°F) for not more than 1/2 h. Then (4) furnace cool to 121°C (250°F) for approximately 2 h. Then (5) cool to room temperature in still air outside the furnace.
(1) Quench in water at 65 to 100°C (150 to 212°F) except as noted.
(2) Quench in water at 65 to 100°C (150 to 212°F) for controlled time of 10–20 s only, then cool in still air outside the furnace. - Solution heat treatment shall be at the temperature: 538°C (1000°F), minimum soak time is 6 hours and Quenched;
Final solution heat treatment above 543°C (1010°F) may require an intermediate solution heat treatment of 1 hour minimum at 538 to 543°C (1000 to 1010°F) to prevent eutectic melting of magnesium-rich phases during final solution heat treatment.
Temper after Solution treatment shall be T4 and delay at room temperature.
Annealing at 441°C (825°F), minimum soak time is 1 hour; Air cooling;
Aging (precipitation heat treatment):
Condition before Aging W or T4;
Aging at 154°C (310°F), soak time is 2-6 hours;
Temper T6 after Aging.
Aging (precipitation heat treatment):
Condition before Aging W or T4;
Aging at 154°C (310°F), soak time is 6-10 hours;
Temper T61 after Aging.
Aging (precipitation heat treatment):
Condition before Aging W or T4;
Aging at 246°C (475°F), soak time is 3-6 hours;
Temper T71 after Aging.
