SAE 296.0 Heat Treatments
Permanent Mold Castings:
Temper T4
Solution Heat Treated (1) at 510 ± 6°C (950 ± 10°F), 8 hours;
Temper T6
Solution Heat Treated (1) at 510 ± 6°C (950 ± 10°F), 8 hours;
Precipitation Heat Treated at 154 ± 6°C (310 ± 10°F), 3-8 hours;
Temper T7
Solution Heat Treated (1) at 510 ± 6°C (950 ± 10°F), 8 hours;
Precipitation Heat Treated at 260 ± 6°C (500 ± 10°F), 4-6 hours.
(1) Quench in water at 65 to 100°C (150 to 212°F) except as noted.- Solution heat treatment shall be at the temperature: 510°C (950°F), minimum soak time is 4 hours and Quenched;
Temper after Solution treatment shall be T4 and delay at room temperature.
Annealing at 427°C (800°F), minimum soak time is 1 hour; Air cooling;
Aging (precipitation heat treatment):
Condition before Aging W or T4;
Aging at 154°C (310°F), soak time is 2-8 hours;
Temper T6 after Aging.
