PROPRIETARY TENAX300 Heat Treatments
- Stress relief: The procedure employs slowly heating to 500-600°C and furnace cooling until 200°C. After tooling, the stress relief must employ a temperature 50°C lower than that of the last tempering.
Hardening: Preheat tools at 780/820°C and transfer them to another furnace hold at 1000/1040°C.
Cooling:
a) Salt-bath at 500/550°C.
b) Oil
c) Forced air.
Tempering: Tools must be tempered immediately after hardening, as soon as they reach 60°C. It is necessary, at least, triple tempering; after each tempering, tools must be slowly cooled to room temperature. The first tempering treatment should be performed at 540°C, and the other treatments between 540-650°C, depending on the desired hardness.
Nitriding: Nitriding must be employed after hardening and tempering, normally in temperatures between 500 and 550°C, since they are at least 50°C lower than the last tempering temperature. As the surface finishing influence the nitriding layer efficiency, it is recommended that the surface is carefully grinned and polished before the nitriding process.
