PROPRIETARY VWM7 Heat Treatments
- Annealing: Soft annealing may be carried out by heating between 850 and 880°C for 2 hours, followed by slow cooling at 10/20°C per hour until 650°C and, then, by air cooling. In this treatment, the use of protective atmosphere is important to avoid surface decarburization.
Stress relieving: The indicated procedure is heating between 600 and 700°C and holding until complete homogenization, followed by slow cooling (air or furnace) at least down to 500°C.
Hardening and Tempering: Hardening (1190-1220°C) and Tempering (560°C). Hardening procedure must involve one pre-heating at 400/500°C followed by other at 860/880°C. After pre-heating, austenitizing temperature may be conducted, followed by quenching down to room temperature. A protective atmosphere is absolutely necessary. Double tempering treatments, of at least 2h, are required and after each one tools must cool down to room temperature.
Surface treatments: If nitriding is applied, the treatment temperature should be lower than the tempering temperature, to avoid decrease of core hardness. It is important that, before all surface treatments, tools have clean surface (without oil or grease) and are free from grinding overheating.
