PROPRIETARY CarTech CTS BD1 Alloy Heat Treatments

  • Annealing: For maximum softness, steel should be heated uniformly at 843-871°C (1550-1600°F). Soak and cool very slowly in the furnace.
For an intermediate or process annealing treatment, heat uniformly at 732-760°C (1350-1400°F). Air cool.

Hardening: Heat at 1010-1066°C (1850-1950°F), soak, quench in warm oil or cool thin sections in air. Do not overheat.

Tempering: To remove peak stresses and yet retain maximum hardness, temper at least 1 hour at 149-177°C (300-350°F).

Hot working: Preheat at 760-816°C (1400-1500°F), then heat slowly and uniformly at 1038-1177°C (1900-2150°F).
Do not forge below 927°C (1700°F), and reheat at often as necessary.

Cold working: If annealed for maximum softness, steel can be moderately cold formed, headed and upset.
