DIN 1.4901 Heat Treatments

  • Quenching and tempering: Hardened at 1040-1090°C, quenched in oil (for wt < 80 mm, cooling in air or controlled atmosphere can be performed).
Tempered at 750-780°C, held 2 min per mm thickness, minimum 60 min, cooled in air.
  • Hardening at 1040-1090°C, cooled in air (for wt > 80 mm, cooling can be performed in oil or similar suspensions or water spray)
Tempering at 740-780°C, hold at least 60 min (the holding period begins when the temperature in the cross section is reached), cooled in air
Tempering after welding at 740-780°C, holding time:
    for s ≤ 8 mm is 30 min
    for 8 < s ≤ 30 mm is 60 min
for s > 30 mm is 2 min/mm, cooled in air. The holding time starts when the temperature in the cross-section is reached.
Stress relieving after cold forming at 700-760°C, hold 2 minutes per mm thickness, at least 60 minutes, cooled in air. The holding time starts when the temperature in the cross-section is reached.

Hot forming should be carried out in the range 1100-850°C. After hot forming, renewed quenching and tempering is required.
