SAE HP 9-4-30 Heat Treatments


  • Duplex annealed: heat to 677°C +/- 14, holding at heat for 4 hours +/-0.25, cooling to room temperature in air or other atmosphere at a rate equivalent to an air cool, reheating to 621°C +/- 14, holding at heat for 4 hours +/-0.25 and cooling to room temperature in air or other atmosphere at a rate equivalent to an air cool;
    Heat treatment for specimens:
    Normalized: heat to 913°C ± 14, hold at heat for not less than 1 hour per 25 mm of maximum section thickness, and cool at a rate equivalent to air cooling to room temperature;
    Hardened: heat to 843°C ± 14, hold at heat for 1 hour per 25 mm of maximum section thickness but not less than 1 hour, quench sections 102 mm and under in nominal thickness into room temperature oil or water and sections over 102 mm in nominal thickness into room temperature oil. Cool to -73°C ± 6, within 2 hours after quenching, hold at -73°C ± 6 for not less than 2 hours, and warm in air to room temperature;
    Tempered: heat to 538°C ± 6, hold at heat for not less than 2 hours, cool to below 52 °C, reheat to 538°C ± 6, hold at heat for not less than 2 hours, and cool in air to room temperature.
  • Normalize by heating to 899°C +/-10, holding at heat for 1 hour per 25,4 mm of maximum cross-section, and cooling in air to room temperature; harden by heating to 843°C +/-10, holding at heat for 1 hour per 25,4 mm of maximum cross-section but not less than 1 hour and quenching in oil or water; cooling to -73°C +/-10, holding at -73°C +/-10 for not less than 2 hours, warming to room temperature; and double temper by heating to 524°C +/-5, holding at heat for 2 hours per inch of maximum cross-section but not less than 2 hours, cooling to approximately 52°C, reheating to 524°C +/-5, holding at heat for 2 hours per 25,4 mm of maximum cross-section but not less than 2 hours and cooling in air to room temperature.
