MIL 4340 Heat Treatments
- (a) Normalize at 900°+/-14°C (1650°+/-25°F) for 1 hour. (b) Austenitized at 815°+/-14°C (1550°+/-25°F) for 1/2 hour. (c) Quenched in oil at 24-60°C (75-140°F). (d} Double tempered at 246°+/-8°C (475°+/-15°F) for 2-4 hours.
- Normalizing temperature range 1600-1700°F, air quenched; Annealing temperature range 1525-1575°F; Furnace cool to 800°F or below; (Recommended subcritical anneal temperature is 1250°F); Austenitizing temperature range 1500-1550°F; Medium for quenching: oil.
