SAE 8630 Mod Heat Treatments
- Normalize: Heated at 927 to 954°C (1700 to 1750°F), in an atmosphere neutral to the specified carbon range, held at heat for not less than 1 hour, and cooled at a rate equivalent to that obtained in still air
Temper: Heated to a temperature not lower than 260°C (500°F)
Harden: Heated to 871°C ± 14°C (1600°F ± 25°F), in an atmosphere neutral to the specified carbon range, held at heat for not less than 30 minutes, and quenched in oil
Temper: Heated to a temperature not lower than 427°C (800°F), held at heat for 1 hour for each 25 mm of cross section but not less than 1 hour, and cooled in air
