SAE 5359 Heat Treatments
- Solution heat treatment: heat to 1095°C ± 10°C, hold at heat for not less than 1 hour per 25 mm of maximum section thickness and cool rapidly in air for castings with all cross-sections 25 mm and under in nominal thickness and in water or oil for castings with any cross-section greater than 25 mm. Equalized and overtempered: when specified by purchaser, castings, after heat treatment shall be heated to 760°C ± 30°C, held at heat for not less than 3 hours, cooled in air to room temperature or below, reheated to 565°C ± 15°C, held at heat for not less than 3 hours and cooled in air. Final heat treatment (FHT): after being austenite conditioned by heating to 940-1010°C, holding at heat for not less than 1 hour per 25 mm of cross-section and quenching in water or cool as rapidly as possible to room temperature, sub-zero cooled by cooling to -75°C or colder, holding at that temperature for not less than 3 hours and warming in air to room temperature and tempered by heating to 540°C ± 15°C, holding at heat for not less than 3 hours and air cooling.
