SAE 420 Heat Treatments


  • Annealing: Heating to 843-899°C (1550-1650°F) for 6 hours, furnace cool to 14-28°C (25-50°F) per hour to 593°C (1100°F) followed by water quenching.
    Austenitizing temperature: 954-1010°C (1750-1850°F), medium for quenching: oil, air or polymer.
    Recommended subcritical anneal: 732-788°C (1350-1450°F), air cool.
  • Heat to 996°C ± 6°C (1825°F ± 10°F), holding at heat for 25 minutes ± 2 minutes and cooled in air.
