SAE 440C Heat Treatments

  • Annealing: Heating to 843-871°C (1550-1600°F) for 6 hours or 899°C (1650°F) for 2 hours + 704°C (1300°F) for 4 hours, furnace cool to 14-28°C (25-50°F) per hour to 593°C (1100°F).
Austenitizing temperature: 1038-1066°C (1900-1950°F), medium for quenching: oil, air or polymer.
Recommended subcritical anneal: 677-732°C (1250-1350°F), air cool.
  • Heat to 1024°C ± 14°C (1875°F ± 25°F), hold at heat for not less than 30 minutes, and cool at a rate equivalent to cooling in still air.
